The Whitefaced Dartmoor History The White Faced Dartmoor is believed to be one of England’s most ancient breeds, and was probably originally not entirely confined to Dartmoor but spread over the greater part of West Somerset and Devon. However, as more land became enclosed, the breed was finally driven back to Dartmoor, where it became firmly rooted, and continues to flourish as one of Devon’s premier native breeds.

An excellent crossing breed The White Faced Dartmoor is recognised as an excellent crossing sheep. For the past 150 years they have been used to improve other long wool breeds and more recently they have been used successfully on many breeds to produce excellent first cross commercial ewes. A good example of this is the Welsh Mountain. The White Faced cross increases carcass weight and quality, wool output, while maintaining their vigour and hardy characteristics. As well as using the whiteface to produce excellent cross bred commercial ewes. The use of terminal sires such as the Suffolk on either pure or crossbred ewes produces a very attractive finished lamb. Ideal for the modern market, being lean and well muscled.    MORE
